How Does the Digital Twin Technology Work?

Posted on June 10, 2021

A digital twin is a digital representation of the physical object or service. In other words, it can be a digital replica of the object in the physical world like the jet engine or wind farms. Moreover, digital twin technology is also used for the replicating process to collect data and predict how they will perform. In the technical world, the digital twin is a computer program using real-world data for creating simulations predicting how the product performs. These programs can integrate IoT, AI, and software analytics.

A digital twin is widely used across different industries solving challenges these industries face. Some of the challenges these industries face are- corrosion resistance, fatigue testing, and efficiency in improvements. It allows users to investigate certain solutions required for the product lifecycle, manufacturing, and process improvements.

Digital twin was invented by David Gelernter in his book named Mirror Worlds along with Michael Grieves of the Florida Institute of Technology going on to apply the concept to manufacturing. However, in the year 2010, NASA embraced this concept to create digital simulations of space capsules and crafts. Further, in 2017, the digital twin was used by Gartner for listing it as one of the top 10 strategic technology trends.
